Screen Enclosure in Colton Ridge, Indian Trail NC

This Colton Ridge homeowner came to us with a porch that had seen better days. Rotting trim and zero bug protection made it nearly unusable. We transformed it into a clean, functional screened porch with black aluminum framing, Phifer fiberglass mesh, and fresh Hardie Trim throughout.

The Challenge: Rotted Trim and No Bug Protection

When this Colton Ridge homeowner reached out to Valverax, their porch was in rough shape. The header and post trim had deteriorated significantly over time, and the open structure left the porch completely exposed to the elements. Anyone who has spent a summer evening on an unscreened porch in Indian Trail knows exactly what that means: mosquitoes the moment the sun drops, gnats during the day, and that relentless cloud of pollen in the spring that coats every surface and irritates anyone with allergies.

The homeowner had two clear goals. First, they needed the rotted trim replaced before it caused further structural damage. Second, they wanted to screen in the porch so they could actually use the space throughout the season without battling bugs every step of the way. They were not looking for a complicated renovation. They wanted practical, durable results that would stand up to the demands of the Union County climate.

Our Solution: Hardie Trim, Black Aluminum, and Phifer Mesh

We started by removing the deteriorating header and post trim and replacing it with Hardie Trim. Hardie Trim is a fiber cement product that resists moisture, rot, and the expansion and contraction that wood struggles with here in North Carolina. Once installed, we painted the trim to give the porch a clean, finished appearance that coordinates with the home's exterior.

With the trim work complete, we installed a 3-inch black aluminum framing system around the perimeter of the porch. The black aluminum gives the enclosure a sharp, modern look that complements the Colton Ridge neighborhood aesthetic. We then stretched Phifer 18x14 fiberglass mesh across the frames. The 18x14 weave is tight enough to keep out the smallest gnats and no-see-ums while still allowing excellent airflow across the space.

To complete the enclosure, we installed an aluminum swing screen door that allows easy in-and-out access while keeping the interior protected. The finished result is a porch that the homeowner described as exactly what they were hoping for. They were very pleased with the end result.

Why This Build Works for Indian Trail Homeowners

Every material we selected for this project was chosen to hold up in the real conditions homeowners face in Indian Trail and across Union County.

Hardie Trim That Actually Lasts

Wood trim on an exterior porch in this region faces constant pressure. Summer humidity drives moisture into wood fibers. Winter temperature swings cause expansion and contraction that opens up paint and caulk seams. By the time this homeowner called us, their original trim had already lost the battle. Hardie Trim is engineered to resist all of those forces, and it holds paint far better than wood over the long run. It is the right material for this climate, and it shows in the finished product.

Black Aluminum That Holds Its Shape

Aluminum framing does not rust, warp, or rot. The 3-inch profile we use provides a sturdy frame that keeps the screen panels taut and properly tensioned over years of use. The black powder coat finish resists fading and keeps its appearance in the sun. For a neighborhood like Colton Ridge where curb appeal matters, the clean lines of black aluminum are a natural fit.

Phifer Mesh That Blocks the Small Stuff

Standard window screen is typically 18x16, but the 18x14 Phifer mesh we installed on this project is still extremely effective against mosquitoes, gnats, and no-see-ums. The fiberglass construction means the mesh will not crease, corrode, or oxidize. It sits flat in the frame and maintains consistent airflow without becoming brittle in the summer heat. For a homeowner whose primary goal was keeping bugs off the porch, this mesh delivers exactly that.

A Screen Door That Gets Used

The aluminum swing screen door we included on this project is a small detail that makes a big difference in daily usability. It swings freely, latches securely, and stands up to repeated use without sagging out of alignment. For a family that wants to move in and out of the porch throughout the day, a well-made screen door is essential.

What This Screen Enclosure Delivers

What the Homeowner Said

"We are so pleased with our patio conversion to screened porch. This was the last of 4 companies I had estimates from, and we are so glad we went with Valverax. From our first meeting with Andrew then John and then Mike, everyone listened carefully to what we wanted and tailored the plan to our needs. Our patio had a couple of quirks that they had to work around and a couple of issues that they addressed very satisfactorily. I could not be happier with the result!"
