Starting Point: An Old Screened Porch That Was Falling Short

When the Valverax team arrived at this home in the Brambleton neighborhood of Charlotte, the porch was enclosed with old-fashioned screens held in place by exterior trim. It was a classic setup that worked for basic ventilation, but it was doing almost nothing to protect the family from the real nuisances of living in Mecklenburg County. During spring, pollen coated every surface within days. When afternoon thunderstorms rolled through, the rain came right in. Bugs were a constant problem from late spring through early fall, cutting short the hours the family could realistically spend outside.

The homeowner had a clear goal: keep pollen, bugs, and rain out while making the space usable for as much of the year as possible. The screened porch was simply not meeting that standard, and the family found themselves avoiding it more often than enjoying it.

Anyone who has lived through a Charlotte spring knows exactly what this family was dealing with. The yellow-green pollen that settles on every car, deck chair, and outdoor table is a recurring reality across Mecklenburg County, and a standard screen offers virtually no defense against it.

The Solution: Custom Vinyl-Film Enclosure Built Around the Existing Structure

This project required careful problem-solving before a single panel was installed. The space between the posts was limited in width, and the height above the existing railing left little room for a standard window configuration. After evaluating the structure, the Valverax team determined that PGT Eze-Breeze horizontal side slider vinyl-film panels were the ideal fit. These panels slide open and closed horizontally, making them perfectly suited for situations where vertical height is at a premium.

To improve both function and appearance, the horizontal spreader bar was positioned at the top of the panel rather than through the middle. This gives the upper portion of the enclosure the look of a transom and keeps the spreader bar completely out of the sightline when looking outside. The result is a cleaner, more open view that does not feel cramped or industrial.

Below the railing, fixed vinyl-film panels were installed to fully close off the lower portion of the porch. On the gable end of the porch where the roofline created a triangular opening, custom trapezoid-shaped fixed vinyl-film panels were fabricated to fill that space precisely. Every opening in the structure was accounted for.

The homeowner also wanted a proper door into the space, so a cabana door with a fixed vinyl-film window was included in the scope of work. Once all panels and the door were in place, the entire interior perimeter was trimmed out with inside trim to give the enclosure a finished, intentional look rather than a utilitarian one.

Materials Used on This Project

PGT Eze-Breeze Horizontal Side Slider Panels

These vinyl-film panels slide open horizontally, making them the right choice when post-to-post width is limited and vertical height above the railing is constrained. They provide weather protection and keep pollen and bugs out while maintaining an open, airy feel when slid open.

Fixed Vinyl-Film Solid Panels

Installed below the railing and in the gable-end trapezoid openings, these fixed vinyl-film panels seal off every remaining gap in the structure. They are clear, lightweight, and flexible, keeping rain and pollen out without blocking light or views.

Cabana Door with Fixed Vinyl-Film Window

A proper entry point was an important part of this homeowner's vision. The cabana door with its fixed vinyl-film window integrates cleanly with the rest of the enclosure system and provides easy access to the space.

Inside Trim

Interior trim was applied around all panels and the door frame to give the enclosure a polished, finished appearance. This detail elevates the entire space and makes it feel like a real room rather than a temporary addition.

The Outcome: A Porch the Whole Family Uses Every Day

Since the project was completed, this Brambleton family has made their enclosed porch part of their daily routine. The combination of vinyl-film panels that keep rain, pollen, and bugs out, along with panels that open fully for fresh air on nice days, has given them a space that works across seasons in a way the old screens never could.

The transom-style placement of the spreader bar, the trapezoid gable panels, and the clean interior trim all contribute to a space that feels considered and finished. This is not a quick fix or a basic screen replacement. It is a purpose-built 3-season vinyl-film enclosure designed around the specific dimensions and conditions of this exact porch in Brambleton, Charlotte.
