A furnished screen porch with no protection from the elements became a beautiful, weather-tight 3-season glass enclosure that this Indian Trail family can enjoy from early spring all the way through late fall.
The homeowners in Mantle Ridge had already invested in comfortable porch furniture and had even installed a free-standing privacy wall to carve out their own outdoor sanctuary. The problem was that the screen porch offered no real protection from the outside elements. When spring pollen settled across Indian Trail, it coated every cushion and surface. Summer afternoon storms pushed rain sideways through the screens. And by mid-October the Carolina chill made spending any time out there simply uncomfortable.
Their goal was straightforward: protect the furniture they had already invested in and stretch the usable life of their porch from a few warm months into something they could genuinely enjoy across most of the year. They did not want to sacrifice the open, airy feeling the space already had. They wanted more seasons, not a sealed-off room.
Valverax evaluated the existing structure and designed a 3 season glass enclosure built around horizontal single-pane glass sliding windows. The horizontal sliding windows allow the homeowners to open up the space fully on mild days, or close everything up tight when an afternoon storm rolls in from the south. A sliding glass door was installed as the primary entry point, keeping the transition between the home and the enclosure smooth and natural. Custom glass transoms and a side light were added at the top of the framing to bring additional daylight into the space without giving up any wall space below.
All framing was done in white aluminum with white mullions, giving the finished enclosure a clean, cohesive look that complements the home exterior. Wall expanders were used to properly marry the new structure to the existing house framing, ensuring a solid, weather-tight connection at every transition point.
The result is a protected, light-filled room that keeps pollen, bugs, and rain completely out while maintaining the open character the homeowners valued from the start.
